Are you Ready for Oral Surgery?

A woman with a being given nitrous oxide to help sedate her for her oral surgery.Oral surgery might seem scary, but we perform it on a daily basis. In order to best prepare yourself, there are certain things you should do and know so that you are not anxious and understand everything that is going on during your oral surgery.

Have Support
Before you have your surgery, we will discuss with you whether or not you will need general anesthesia. If you do, you will need someone to drive you home. Sometimes, even without general anesthesia, however, a ride home is not a bad idea because it ensures you that you can relax and have someone watch over you as you recover. This helps to keep many patients' minds at ease.

Changes to your Oral Habits

You might be required to fast for a certain length of time before your surgery. If you are having general anesthesia, that length of time is typically 8 hours, but we will instruct you on your exact situation. If you are not having anesthesia, you may still need to refrain from eating and drinking a few hours before the procedure. If you smoke, this should be stopped at least 12 hours before any procedure.

After your surgery, you will need to relax for 24-48 hours. It is best to plan ahead for this to happen so that you are not stressed or overwhelmed as you are trying to recover. The better you take care of yourself during the first two days, the faster you will recover!
