Do You Need Sinus Lift Surgery?

Posted on 4/20/2016 by Jeffery Gerhardt
A man in need of a sinus lift to receive a dental implant!Has your dentist recommended a sinus lift surgery before your dental implants and referred to you to an oral surgeon? If so, you may be wondering what in the world your sinuses have to do with your teeth.

In fact, the sinuses are actually located in close proximity to your mouth, and the procedure works to add bone to the upper jaw in the area of your premolars and molars.

What is the Purpose of a Sinus Lift Procedure?

A sinus lift is typically performed if your upper jaw doesn't have enough bone or if the sinuses are located too close to the jaw. These conditions may have resulted from one of several scenarios:

•  You may have lost bone as a result of severe gum disease
•  Tooth loss could have resulted in bone loss, as the jawbone relies on the teeth for stimulation
•  The maxillary sinus may simply be too close to the upper jaw

In many cases, a sinus lift surgery may be needed before you can have dental implants put into place. If there isn't enough bone to support an implant - or if the maxillary sinus is too close to the upper jaw to support the implants - a sinus lift will be required.

Are You a Candidate for a Sinus Lift?

If you are a good candidate for dental implants but suffer from one of the previously described issues, you are likely a good candidate for a sinus lift procedure, as well. However, you will need to be in good health in order to undergo the surgical treatment for both of these procedures.

If you are interested in dental implants, but know that you first need a sinus lift, what are you waiting for? The smile of your dreams is within your reach, and by undergoing a sinus lift, you can have it as soon as possible.
