Before Getting Dental Implants You Might Want to Consider...

Posted on 9/10/2016 by Jeffery Gerhardt
A diagram of how a dental implant works. It's not a secret - dental implants are one of the most popular procedures that oral surgeons provide. In fact, the procedure is so wildly successful that other dental professionals have decided to start offering it as a procedure that they provide.

So, why would you want to go to an oral surgeon when the dentist that you have been going to for five or ten years is offering you the option to have it done in his office? Well, there are a few things to consider before deciding who will give you a dental implant.

Is My Dentist Qualified?

Oral surgeons complete a ton of additional schooling in order to obtain their license. Schooling that general dentists and most other dental professionals never receive. Further, oral surgeons attend residency programs at hospitals to gain the experience required to complete complex procedures. Dentists have to attend a weekend course on how to place implants in order to provide the procedure.

What's Your Success Rate?

Question anyone who is going to perform a medical/dental procedure on you. If you are going to trust your future health to someone you ought to know what the success rate of their practice is and it ought to be high!

How Many Implants Have You Placed?

Sure, you can have a 100% success rate if you have only placed one implant and it did well. Experience in the procedure is the key here. Most dentists aren't placing implants every day, so they may have only completed a tiny handful of procedures compared to us.

We at Advanced Family Dentistry & Braces perform this procedure every day, usually, several times a day.

How long Will It Take?

This is a procedure that shouldn't be rushed. There are a lot of complex issues that can and do arise, so taking time to do the procedure right is important. That being said it shouldn't last more than an hour and a half under most circumstance - usually less than that.
