Dental implants that go on your upper front teeth need bone to fuse with in order for them to become stable. However, not everyone has sufficient bone in this area of their mouth to be able to get dental implants here.
If you do not have sufficient bone, either in quality or quantity, you may need a sinus lift in order to have dental implants placed. This will help increase both the bone's density and quantity so that dental implants can then become possible.
What Exactly is a Sinus Lift? A sinus lift is a type of bone graft. It involves your oral surgeon going into the small cavity that used to be between the roots of your upper front teeth and the bottom of your sinus cavity and nose. This is a very thin bit of bone normally, which doesn't bode well for placing implants.
They need structure and strength to fuse together. In order to make sure your sinus is strong enough to hold a dental implant, all they have to do is add more bone.
This is done by lifting up the floor of the sinus cavity, usually through the root area of your missing front tooth, and slide a tiny sliver of bone in there. This will then fuse with your bone, increasing its strength. Once the bone and graft have fused, the implant can be placed, which can then fuse to what new bone is in place.
A sinus lift allows people who would otherwise not be a good candidate for implants, to get them. It takes a little bit of time, but the effort is well worth it. If you want to find out if you would be a good candidate for a sinus lift, or for dental implants, ask your oral surgeon at your next appointment!
